Chapter Nineteen

Reyah

The next morning I woke to a quiet room. I’d slept so soundly the night before that I’d only woken when Kaspian was coaxing me awake, fully clothed and already smelling of rich coffee. Ari was gone already as I stretched my stiff muscles.

“Good morning, wife.”

“Good morning.”

He drew the curtain open and I sat up lazily. “How do you feel?”

“Wonderful.” I smiled, feeling my eyes still swollen from sleep.

“No regrets about last night?”

I debated that a moment, and Kas began to look concerned. “My only regret is that I wasn’t more involved. I want to be the focus of both your attention next time.”

“Next time?” he said with a soft chuckle.

“Would you allow it?”

His smile lit his face as he planted his hands on either side of me, leaning down and placing a lingering kiss on my lips.

“What man in his right mind would deny that request, Little Raven?”

“An insecure man.”

“Mm, perhaps. And I’ll bet an insecure man wouldn’t be fantasizing about watching you with one of the young guards outside.”

I instantly pulled back from him, eyes no doubt bulging as a sudden pang of fear ripped through me. Kas simply continued his seductive chuckle.

“You look bewildered, my love.”

“I—am. You would bring another man into our bed?”

“I can’t promise the same enthusiasm in participating that you showed Ari, but the idea certainly doesn’t repulse me. I want to sit and see you fucked at my command.”

Words escaped me.

“I’ll take that as enthusiastic, yet silent approval. Come, breakfast is served. I’ll sit with you while you eat,” Kas said as he pulled the sheets from me.

Now it was just the two of us seated at the table, the rustle of his papers and the gentle scrape of my fork the only sounds in the room. My head still buzzing about his earlier suggestion.

“Where is everyone?” I asked. “Did they already eat?”

“Yates wakes at the crack of dawn to care for the horses, but I have no fucking idea where anyone else is.” He marked up the paper he was reading and set it aside.

I glanced out the long bay window and watched our little caravan as busy as ever outside. A wagon was just pulling up with baskets of fresh fish and a tower of paper-wrapped meat, butchered into sections. The day was cold and clear beyond the glass, and miles away I thought I could just make out the foothills that led to the Kardonian Mountains.

“Do you think they know we’re coming?”

“I would be surprised if they didn’t. A royal caravan with half an army usually doesn’t go unnoticed.”

Unease twinged in my stomach. Two more days and I would be home again. What would I find waiting for me?

Nyx then sauntered into the dining room. “Good morning,” he said chipperly as he sat across from me and began helping himself to breakfast. He was completely unaware of how the King and I stared at him. Finally, with a mouth full of grapes he noticed us.

“Wha?” he managed.

“What the fuck happened to you?”

He chewed and swallowed enough to answer.
